New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate throughout his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central platform, did not confirm his residency plans right away following his triumph in November.

"The choice rested on the security of my family and the importance of directing my complete efforts on implementing the platform on affordability the city's residents voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community known for its abundance of immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, the community will continue to reside within me and the work I do," he said.

A Contentious Issue

In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

However his rivals, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment even though he came from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for public city functions, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his previous Astoria digs.

With its cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the price of rent outpaces what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
