This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future away from worry.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a local firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “6-7” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Every time, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
