The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
