Severe Rains Worsen Circumstances for Displaced Palestinians in Gaza, Officials Caution
Intense storms over the last seven days have compounded the precarious circumstances of the vast number of evacuated Palestinians in the territory, according to humanitarian groups.
"Awful" Night Brings Grave Threats
A representative described the recent storm as "awful", with precipitation so heavy that as much as 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the streets.
"These conditions was exceptionally terrible for the families. The downpours were so intense... And the gusts were so forceful," said the official.
There is extreme worry that minors sheltering in tents in damp attire will contract hypothermia and other sicknesses.
Deaths and Significant Destruction
Medical officials have reported that one baby has died from the cold and at least 11 other people have lost their lives in roof cave-ins triggered by the harsh conditions.
Further statements put a increased death toll. Spokespeople reported that numerous structures had collapsed completely and scores had sustained partial collapse.
- Almost 55,000 families harmed by the weather.
- More than 40 designated shelters severely flooded.
- Many people compelled to find new shelter.
Aid Distribution Considered Insufficient
Agencies have stepped up shipments of tarpaulins, warm covers and clothes since the truce commenced, but they stress there is still not enough aid getting in.
"Officials are operating tirelessly to bring in that aid and to distribute it, but the scale of the needs is so vast that we are faced with thousands of families and minors who are truly suffering nightly," warned one spokesperson.
Long-Term Challenges and Agreement Plans
The subsequent part of the truce encompasses plans for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with post-war governance, the pullback of troops, and other provisions.
Humanitarian organizations have underscored the imperative for "increased and sustained aid to respond to immediate and ongoing requirements."
The conflict was triggered by an attack in October 2023. Subsequent actions have resulted in a high number of casualties in the area, based on medical figures.
