Pat Bamford Joins the Blades After Initiating Abusive Chants Targeting Manager Chris Wilder
The striker has joined Sheffield United only seven months following leading insulting chants aimed at their manager, Chris Wilder.
The 32-year-old forward, without a club after departing from Leeds United, has put pen to paper on a contract joining the second-tier club in difficulty through the winter. Bamford's lengthy career at Elland Road was ended by mutual consent in August.
Among the player's last memorable actions while at Leeds included starting insulting songs about Chris Wilder amid the club’s promotion celebrations this spring. Currently, the former England international will be playing for Wilder as Sheffield United's boss aims to lift the team he loves away from the relegation zone.
Previous Conflict Between Bamford and Wilder
The pair had a past before Leeds won promotion to the Premier League last season and United lost the playoff final by Sunderland. The manager described the forward as “a muppet” when the situation was different in 2018-19 and the Blades secured direct promotion whereas Leeds United fell short in the promotion playoffs.
Reconciliation and Moving Forward
Everything appears to have been resolved with United, the Championship’s least productive attack, in desperate need of improvement up front while Bamford looking to revive his playing days.
The Wilder chant gained traction this spring. An apologetic Bamford and the Leeds manager, Farke, called the Sheffield United manager the next day.
Chris Wilder said at the time: “Spoke with Patrick yesterday and I’ve no problem whatsoever with that. I’m not sure about the words used from a fellow professional! But I appreciated and respected him calling me.
“We spent a short while and the same again I spoke to Daniel Farke as well and had a longer discussion together and he's a great person, a top guy. Back in my playing days we would dish it out and accept it and that’s an integral part of the game at every level, even on Sunday league. I've got absolutely no issue. I'm fine with the situation and I said that to Pat.”
Recent Career Struggles
Bamford featured in 18 games with Leeds United last season however the ex- Forest, Chelsea and Boro player has struggled with injury in recent years.
