The distinctive yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us verify the footage.
Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs posted this morning that show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the location from which the pictures originated relied on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
