As stated by a former high-ranking official from the UK's largest police force, police departments are now required to disclose the racial identities of suspects in response to a surge in far-right speculation on social media platforms.

Recent Incident: Train Stabbing in Cambridgeshire

Early Sunday, UK rail authorities reported the arrest of two individuals following a multiple knife attacks on a railway carriage in Cambridgeshire. One suspect, a 32-year-old black British national, and another, a 35-year-old of Caribbean descent, were taken into custody. Later, the older suspect was freed with no further action, and police confirmed he was not involved in the incident.

New Guidance to Fight False Claims

In August, revised directives were rolled out to address the spread of misinformation on social media, which had escalated after the tragic murder of young students in a English town last summer.

However, campaigners have raised concerns that this move could lead to an overemphasis on the racial background of suspects and spark further rightwing conspiracy theories when details are not shared with the general population.

Expert Opinion

Dal Babu, who served in the Metropolitan Police, described the need for police to disclose the ethnicity of suspects in incidents involving ethnic minorities as an "unintended consequence".

“When the new guidance was issued, I warned that there was a danger that there will be an expectation for police to release information on every single occasion,” he said.

He voiced understanding for his former colleagues in the police, noting that they are “damned if they do and damned if they don’t”. “They are under pressure because there is such intense speculation from the far right on social media after every major incident about the background of suspects.”

Political Reaction

A Conservative MP, whose constituency includes Huntingdon, described it “sad” but essential for authorities to quickly disclose the ethnicities of those detained.

“It’s not ideal, but I comprehend the reasons. They essentially have no choice at this point,” he remarked, stating that online platforms are leveraged to push agendas, making it critical for law enforcement to provide facts to address speculation.

Far-Right Exploitation

Before the official disclosure, conservative figures had demanded a quicker action. For instance, the shadow home secretary pushed for timely release of identity details, while Nigel Farage posted on X that the people needed to know “as soon as possible”.

Additionally, far-right social media accounts sought to manipulate the event. One account named “British Patriot”—boosting thousands of followers—circulated an baseless allegation that a knife-wielding man had been yelling a religious phrase.

Ongoing Suspicion

Even after police confirmed that the suspects were UK citizens, certain individuals continued to suggest that details was being concealed. A former Reform UK co-leader claimed it was “hard to believe” that the incident was not an act of terrorism, contrary to police assurances to the opposite.

Guidance Background

These protocols were developed by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) in acknowledgment of “public concerns” and to ensure police processes were “effective in today’s fast-paced information era”.
