Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board

Leadership Change
Summers stated he would retreat from public duties after House committee made public his frequent correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein

One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the directorate at OpenAI, just days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

The economist remarked in a release that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have served, optimistic about the promise of the company, and look forward following their progress".

The prominent academic, who previously presided over Harvard University, declared on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Epstein.

Email Communications

The newly public communications demonstrated that the economist communicated with Epstein until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for alleged sex trafficking of minors.

In additional comments, the AI firm stated it respected Summers' choice to step down.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he brought to the governing body," OpenAI stated.

Congressional Action

This announcement follows after the entire Congress of the legislative branch decided on recently to pass a bill that would compel the federal prosecutors to release its records on Epstein.

The measure will then move to the office of President Trump for endorsement. He has indicated he expects to endorse the bill, after modifying his view on the matter following pressure from his base.

Correspondence Findings

A batch of Epstein-related emails made public by the House Oversight Committee days ago referenced multiple well-known personalities in the billionaire's previous network, without indicating any criminal activity by those people.

The communications revealed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to connect Summers to influential global figures.

Personal Accountability

After the correspondence were released with the general audience, Summers stated he assumed "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to continue corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he desired "to rebuild confidence and mend connections with the people nearest to me".

Previous Positions

Summers held high-level positions under Democratic administrations; serving as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He led Harvard from the early 2000s and continues to be a professor there. When declaring his departure from public duties recently on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his teaching commitments.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' statement on Monday, the policy organization, a progressive policy institute in DC where he was a prominent member, confirmed that he was not associated with the organization.

The former official joined the board of the technology firm, which makes the language model, in last year - following a defeated move to remove its chief executive the company leader.
