An iconic tropical holiday destination located within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the legacy and commitment that the family owners has built in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending customary regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly 30% of the area is built upon, featuring a substantial array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, first bought the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.
