Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.

A new acronym came to light a few months into the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is found only in Gaza, according to medical experts such as child health specialists. Normally, it is rare for medical staff to treat a child who has seen the death of their entire family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal about many doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs contend that atrocities are ongoing. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, just as it denies all charges it is charged with. Yet as young survivors are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, although several European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, it seems, is what global togetherness resembles.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering

The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A contest that initially championed harmony has now become a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
