Three police officers perished and more than a dozen additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently deliberate gas explosion at a country home in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation occurred as police and firefighters approached the residence in the vicinity of Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three victims who died were members of the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals got detained at the site and one more individual who ran away after the blast was found not long after. Each of them have been admitted to hospital.

The explosion could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location revealed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, stated the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the siblings.

Mediators had been assigned to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the residents caused the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander told news outlets.

A propane tank had been activated, and the detonation precisely impacted our members,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the residence, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the explosion comprised eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of the state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

He thought the explosion had occurred on a story above the access point and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the explosion, he mentioned officers had “heard a whistle, likely the gas canisters being activated”.

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants informed local news, adding that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
